Several STC Elite athletes were competing Saturday on the campus of Wichita State University in the Herm Wilson Invitational while Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton competed well in Puerto Rico.

Heptathlete Austin Bahner used this meet as preparation for the upcoming USA Indoor Championships and participated in five events running 7.03 in the 60m, 8.63 in the 60m hurdles as well as high jumping 6-2.75, pole vaulting 15-7 and shot putting 41-8.5. Bahner looks poised to have a strong performance in two weeks in Boston.

Tobias Boese completed the entire Heptathlon and put up a season best score of 4847 points to finish 2nd overall.

Sprinters Oliver Bradwell and Josh Manuel both made the 60m finals. Bradwell took 3rd in 6.92 (6.93 prelim) while Manuel was 14th (7.21, 6.98 prelim). STC Open team member Aaron Babbidge placed 9th overall in 7.11.

Distance star Tomas Cotter rabbited two races (800m and 3k) and used this meet as a high quality workout in preparation for the upcoming outdoor season.

Fellow distance star Tuliamuk-Bolton continued her terrific road racing season by placing 2nd in the San Blas Half Marathon with a time of 1:12.51. Her time was only 11 seconds off the previous course record.

STC Elite’s Tomas Cotter picked up two victories in his official 2015 indoor debut Saturday in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the Prairie Wolf Invitational.

Cotter opened up the day with a new personal best of 14:36.21 in the 5000m to win by a margin of 27 seconds.  Then he dropped down to win the 800m in 1:55.65.

Cotter said, “I was very happy with both races as I’ve never attempted a rare double like that before and I’ve only had two track workouts since the Intersquad Meet on December 5th.  I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and I’m still building towards outdoors!”

Cotter hopes to run a few more indoor races before making a serious run at making the World Outdoor Championships for his country of Ireland in the 3000m steeplechase.

It was a great weekend for the STC Elite squad, led by a fantastic performance from Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton (ATB) who won the Carlsbad Half Marathon with a time of 1:11:48.

Said ATB about the race, “I thought it went well, not a fast time but good enough for a season opener.  I battled with the second place girl through 10 miles then gradually increased the pace and dropped her.  I went out conservatively because I don’t have turnover yet and didn’t want to struggle at the end.  It worked well!”

Three other STC Elites competed Friday in the Shocker Prelude on the campus of Wichita State University.

Austin Bahner had a nice meet in preparation for his season opening Heptathlon in two weeks.  Bahner began his day with a time of 8.65 in the 60m hurdle prelims and advanced to the finals.  He didn’t run the finals because he was in the middle of the Pole Vault competition  where he set a new personal best of 4.76m (15-7.25) where he finished 2nd (lost in a jumpoff).

Said Bahner, “I was extremely happy with the results of my first hurdle race of the season and a new PR in the Pole Vault, especially being this early.”

Tobias Boese matched his training partner’s hurdle time in the prelims of 8.65 and then ran 8.68 in the finals to place 3rd.  He also vaulted 4.11m (13-5.75).

From Boese, “It felt great to get competitive.  I’m still working out some kinks in the vault but showed some good signs.  I was pleased to run a couple hurdle races with consistency, this is the fastest I’ve ever run this early in the season.  I can’t wait for the UNI multi in two weeks!”

Oliver Bradwell opened up his season in the 60m where he ran 7.00 in the prelims and 6.94 in the finals to place 4th.

Former Wichita State track and field athletes Austin Bahner and Tobias Boese along with Wichita East product Oliver Bradwell will compete Friday in the Shocker Prelude as the newest members of the Shocker Track Club Elite team.

For the past three years the Shocker Track Club served as a non-profit organization that has devoted time and provided an outlet to help former Shocker athletes purse their dreams of competing post-collegiately. Through the years the number of former Shocker athletes continues to grow, primarily due to the connection the club has with the Wichita State track program. John Wise assists as the head director of the program while also maintaining his duties as Wichita State’s sprint coach.

“For years we’ve had kids on our team that wanted to continue competing after college,” Wise said, “but at the time we didn’t have a system intact. Our idea was to create this club to give former Shocker athletes and people in our area something to belong to.”

It’s free to join the track club, but there’s a process involved. There are two teams: Elite and Developmental. To be a part of these teams athletes are required to submit an application that will be reviewed by the committee. After the application is reviewed, the committee will then take vote to decide if the athlete is an elite or developmental prospect – or neither.

This is a process both Bahner and Boise underwent; Bahner qualified for the elite team and Boese qualified for the developmental team.

“It’s extremely nice to have this kind of opportunity considering not a lot of schools or places have a track club,” Bahner said. “I had the idea of competing post-collegiately after the past couple of years of college track and field, so I was excited to hear about the Shocker Track Club when it first started. I participated in a meeting, received information about the club, and signed up. The board members determine if you are in the developmental or elite program in which I was recognized as an elite member.”

Though the Shocker Track Club is considered a team, both Bahner and Boise have had their share of adjustments with more responsibility being place upon them.  Bahner said in the beginning it was more difficult staying dedicated, but he’s since found balance between work, social life and training. Bahner also added, “Scheduling is a lot different because the ultimate goal is to aim and peak at the big meets like USA Nationals and USA team meets that follow.”

Boese, who dealt with several injuries, believes he can flourish with the freedom to adjust training and scheduling to fit his needs, but is also enjoying his long awaited experience joining the track club.

“I had watched people prior to me to being on Shocker Track Club compete post collegiately,” Boise said. “I knew long before I graduated that I wanted to continue my track career after college track was done. It’s different from college in that there is no external pressure. I’m not trying to fulfill my scholarship and preform up to anybody’s standards but my own.

“The thing that keeps me going is what I call my ‘unfinished business’ – It’s my motivation. In college it was to win an MVC championship and qualify for NCAAs, now it’s to make a USA championship.  I can’t wait to see what this year brings, and possibly, what the years to come have to offer. I’m just glad to be a part of team again and train around such a fantastic tradition at Wichita State.”

Bahner and Boese along with other Shocker Elite athletes will compete this Friday and the rest of the season in hopes of attracting sponsors and future donors.

Austin Bahner was the first STC Elite athlete to begin the indoor season as he competed at the Bill Easton Classic Friday at the University of Kansas.

Bahner began his day by running 7.03 in the 60m to place 2nd in his prelim.  He ran fast enough to qualify for the finals but in this meet they only took collegiate athletes to the 60m final.

He then placed 11th in the Pole Vault with a jump of 15-1 (4.60m) and 11th  in the Shot Put with a throw of 42-11.75 (13.10m).

Bahner has already qualified for the USA Indoor Championships in the Heptathlon and plans to compete throughout the indoor season to get ready for that competition.  His first Heptathlon is scheduled for January 30 at the University of Northern Iowa.

Attention track & field enthusiasts! The Shocker Track Club Elite Team is about to begin their indoor season and they need your help. Being a post collegiate track & field athlete is a difficult proposition. We have several terrific men and women who are talented and motivated enough to make the upcoming Olympics and World Championships but financial support for these athletes is very hard to come by. Luckily we’ve received some support from First Gear Running Company, Adidas and Asics but it isn’t nearly enough to cover the expenses associated with chasing these athletes’ dreams.
